Surface coater (m/f)

Training period 3 years

As a surface coater you are responsible for the surface of our products. However, it is not a matter here of actual surface working, but rather of precision analyses and blending exact chemical mixtures in order to achieve the desired look, feel and ergonomics of our products.

Field of activity
  • You upgrade metals and PVC surfaces using electrochemical processes
  • You achieve a specific type of material protection and our products
  • You monitor the operating steps involved, check on layer thicknesses and undertake analyses
  • Your work also includes final surface work such as sanding down and polishing
Career prospects after successful training:
  • Galvaniser foreman
  • State-accredited technician
  • Technical business administrator
  • Engineer
Requirements

School-leaving qualification:
advanced technical college certificate ("Fachoberschulreife") as a minimum

Schooling:
An in-depth knowledge of the following school subjects provides the requirements for successful training:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Metalwork/technical matters
  • Mathematics

Inclinations and interests:

  • Interest in chemical processes (e.g. preparing various chemical baths)
  • A leaning towards manual/craft work (e.g. applying gold and silver coatings for the jewellery and cutlery industries)
  • Preference for handling metal (setting up metal coatings on metals or synthetic materials)
  • A leaning towards practical, hands-on work (e.g. cleaning, de-greasing and sanding down workpieces before treatment; cleaning trays and baths)
  • A leaning towards dealing with technical equipment, machinery and systems (e.g. electro-plating equipment, hot-dipped galvanising or vacuum coating equipment)
  • A leaning towards work of the inspecting and checking variety (e.g. controlling bath dwelling time, examining layer thickness and checking on precipitations in terms of bonding, hardness and conductivity)
